Committed to Serving You
As a long-time Laguna Woods Village resident, as well as an experienced local broker, I bring special insight to my real estate practice and to LagunaWoodsRealEstate.info.
The name of the website means what it says. Information is the priority here because the more you know the better you can make an informed decision on how to invest in your retirement.
Here you'll find answers to your questions about the Laguna Woods real estate market, the community of Laguna Woods Village, and the active retirement lifestyle of the Orange County coast. That lifestyle extends across Southern California and we also serve buyers and sellers in active retirement communities in San Diego, Riverside, Los Angeles and Ventura counties under the banner of SoCal Home Broker.
My relationship with my clients often extends beyond what you might expect from a broker. Because I've traveled a bit further along the learning curve of active retirement living, I'm often able to offer some friendly guidance on issues beyond "the deal." Just a few examples of topics discussed with clients recently: making the most of retirement living, property value preservation, and protecting personal assets.
Making the Most of Retirement
The latest research on the linkages between physical activity, health and aging confirm the wisdom of the old cliché: "The most important thing in life is good health!"
And the more active you are, the more likely you will live longer while avoiding disabling illness and disease, contain your medical expenses, and extend your ability to work and remain independent.
If you’re a baby boomer, an active lifestyle that promotes good health could become the single most important preoccupation of the remaining – and potentially best – years of your life.
The nation’s largest active retirement community is the Orange County coast’s own Laguna Woods Village. A community survey by UC Irvine researcher Richard McCleary revealed residents here were much more active than the general senior population, and healthier because of it.
Laguna Woods Village residents averaged twice-weekly visits to community fitness centers, swimming pools and golf courses. As a result, fewer than 5% said they had any impairment that affected their daily living, compared with 14% of the same age group nationally.
"Following an active lifestyle is an effective way to achieve healthy aging," said scientists who conducted research into the effects of physical activity on people age 50 and older, as reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
A 46 year study of 5,209 Framingham, Mass. residents found that moderate to high levels of physical activity resulted in longer life and less heart disease, according to researchers. The array of recreation offered by Laguna Woods Village is the perfect prescription for longevity therapy.
If plenty of exercise is good for the heart, it’s also good for the brain. People who are physically active "have a decreased rate of Alzheimer's, cognitive and memory decline, and depression," said researchers.
Also helpful is mental exercise, such as offered by the long menu of games, clubs and social activities at Laguna Woods Village. The Village was the setting for a recent New York Times article on "Brain Power": the ongoing study of aging and memory retention.
The results of two more recent studies showed even more conclusively that engaging in daily moderate exercise and brain engagement were overwhelmingly the top ways to extend life expectancy.
The authors of the Framingham study concluded that it’s never too late to benefit from increased activity. Even moderate levels of activity will help boomers enjoy a healthier and more rewarding retirement.
Property Value Preservation
The abundant opportunities for recreation and the active social scene are often given as prime reasons for choosing to live in Laguna Woods Village. But just as important to many residents is the security of living in a gated, restricted community that protects property values and lifestyle.
In Laguna Woods Village, strong and well-funded homeowner’s associations (HOAs) maintain all the amenities, such as the golf courses, tennis courts, swimming pools, and equestrian facilities, as well as the residential neighborhoods. HOA restrictions and community security also protect homeowners from the common blights of noise, traffic, overcrowding and over-building.
Located in the heart of one of the country’s most desirable housing markets and built on prime land adjacent to the coast, Laguna Woods Village combines resort living with homeowner security to create an environment that preserves home values.
Protecting Personal Assets
When it come to personal assets, many Laguna Woods Village residents find that, after consulting with an attorney and/or an accountant, establishing a revocable living trust allows them to better control the distribution of their estate and shelter it from taxes.
Under a revocable living trust, ownership of a Laguna Woods Village manor, along with other property and assets, is transferred into the trust. A resident can serve as trustee or can appoint another to serve as trustee. If the resident serves as trustee, he/she must appoint a successor to serve as trustee upon death.
A revocable living trust can be canceled or changed at any time.
Properly drafted and executed, a revocable living trust can help your survivors avoid the long delays involved in probate because the assets are owned by the trust.
Again, consult with an attorney and/or an accountant about the best way to establish a trust and protect your estate.
